Is this the least compelling matchup possible?
There are teams with fewer victories than the 23-win Marlins, yet the Pirates and Orioles at least have some star power, while a meeting between the Rockies and the White Sox would be interesting in the same way people like going to see screenings of The Room. But this? Colorado versus Miami? This is only for the diehards and the gamblers, I’m afraid.
On that note, let’s break down tonight’s tilt with some odds and lines on the DraftKings Sportsbook.
Rockies vs. Marlins prediction, preview
The Rockies are 9-50. Nine wins. It’s June 2. That puts Colorado on pace to finish the season with 25 victories — and that’s only when I round up. Needless to say, things are pretty bleak with the Blake Street Bombers, and most of the issues stem from the team’s complete inability to score runs. The Rockies rank dead-last in MLB in almost every offensive category. That includes average (.215), OBP (.280), wOBA (.280) and, of course, wRC+ (63), where the difference between them and the 29th place Pirates is a whopping 17%. Remember, these are the club’s overall numbers, the ones that include the games at Coors Field. When Colorado is on the road, as it will be on Monday, it slashes .190/.252/.303 with a 54 wRC+. This is a level of hitting incompetence that we’ve simply never seen before.
The man attempting to exploit this underwhelming lineup will be Max Meyer, formerly the third-overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. Meyer started 2025 as if he were set to break out for the Marlins, yet the right-hander has been experiencing his own issues since April 27. In fact, Meyer owns an ugly 6.98 ERA in his last six starts, a span of time where he’s mustered just a 15.8% strikeout rate. For some context, Meyer posted an eye-popping 33.9% strikeout rate in his first five outings of the season, capped by a 14-strikeout performance against the Reds on April 21. He’s been almost unrecognizable since.
On the other side of this pitching matchup, you’ll find German Marquez. The 30-year-old’s overall statistics don’t look great, yet Marquez seems to be re-finding his groove after essentially missing all of 2023 and 2024 due to injury. Marquez has pitched at least six innings and held opponents to two earned runs or fewer in three of his past four trips to the mound. That includes his most recent start in Wrigley, when Marquez limited the always dangerous Cubs to two runs over six frames with six strikeouts. Since May 11, Marquez sports a 3.53 ERA and a 3.03 FIP.
Rockies vs. Marlins pick, best bet
Best Bet: Under 8 (-105)
Both teams sit in the bottom five in home runs and the bottom 10 in wRC+ so far this season.
Strong Lean: Max Meyer 9+ Strikeouts (+310)
Let’s go big. Meyer’s shown huge strikeout potential and the Rockies own a 28.3% strikeout rate on the road — easily the highest mark in baseball.
