The WNBA season continues Friday with five games on the schedule, including a pair of marquee matchups out West as the Los Angeles Sparks visit the Las Vegas Aces and the unbeaten Minnesota Lynx take on the Phoenix Mercury. Liberty -8 (-108)
New York is off to a 5-0 start and chasing its best opening since the inaugural 1997 season. Breanna Stewart poured in 27 points on Thursday and Sabrina Ionescu added 24 as the Liberty edged the Valkyries 82-77.
“We’ve got to be tougher than that,” Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello said. “Most important thing is we won the game, found a way, and Stewie was amazing.”
Washington enters 3-3 after a win over Indiana, getting key support from rookies Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen, who are averaging 15.0 and 14.2 points, respectively.
Sparks +10.5 (-118)
Kelsey Plum returns to Las Vegas for the first time since leaving the Aces. She’s averaging 25.2 points for the Sparks, including a 27-point effort in a narrow loss to Atlanta.
“KP’s been amazing, and there’s been a lot of pressure on her,” Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts said. “She’s one of those type of players where every time she shoots, you assume it’s in.”
A’ja Wilson and the Aces have dropped two of their last three, and this rivalry has traditionally been competitive, with the teams splitting four matchups last season.
Dream +5 (-112)
Despite missing Jordin Canada and Brittney Griner, Atlanta has won three straight. Rhyne Howard has stepped into a playmaking role, and the bench delivered a season-high 25 points last time out.
“She’s really elevated to an elite wing defender,” head coach Karl Smesko said of Howard. “She’s been sharing the ball, keeping everybody involved.”
Seattle is coming off an 82-77 loss to Minnesota, falling behind early and unable to complete a comeback despite solid bench play.
Mercury +4 (-110)
Phoenix (4-1) has won two straight and boasts a strong balance between Alyssa Thomas’ all-around impact and Satou Sabally’s scoring punch. Thomas had 15 assists on Tuesday and is averaging 15.2 points, 8.0 assists and 7.6 rebounds.
“I’m always about the easy shot, and when they’re open, I’m going to find them,” Thomas said.
Minnesota remains unbeaten at 5-0, led by Napheesa Collier, who tops the league in scoring (26.8 PPG). Kayla McBride made her season debut Tuesday, scoring 15 points in a five-point win over Seattle.
“From the moment I came back, it’s been nothing but love and support,” McBride said. “I’m just lucky. That’s what you saw out there.”
