Paige Bueckers makes her return to Connecticut as the Dallas Wings (0-4) face off against the Sun (0-4) in a battle of winless teams. Bueckers, who led UConn to a national title just two months ago, is averaging a team-high 13.0 points and is 4-for-12 from deep to start her WNBA career.
Through four games, Bueckers became the fastest player in league history to reach 50 points and 25 assists, surpassing even UConn legend Sue Bird. The Wings have dropped 13 straight games dating back to last season, but have shown signs of life and improvement.
“I am encouraged by our continued fight and how this team isn’t laying down,” Wings coach Chris Koclanes said. “There have been times in every game where you see where this game is going … and this group has always fought, and that’s something we can get behind.”
Connecticut, meanwhile, ranks last in the WNBA in scoring (68.0 PPG) and is coming off a 55-point outing against Atlanta. Tina Charles leads the team with 14.5 points per game, but the offense has yet to find a rhythm under first-year coach Rachid Meziane.
Storm +7.5 (-112)
Seattle (3-1) enters Tuesday’s matchup against unbeaten Minnesota (4-0) as a significant underdog despite impressive recent form. Skylar Diggins is coming off a 24-point, 14-assist effort that tied Sue Bird’s franchise record for single-game assists, and Nneka Ogwumike added 24 points and eight rebounds.
“It means a lot, especially with a decorated franchise,” Diggins said. “It’s why I came here. Just looking up to people like Sue Bird and trying to continue that legacy.”
The Storm used a 12-0 run to take control late against the Mercury and held Phoenix scoreless for the final 4:48. Seattle has been battle-tested and competitive in every game this season, and this matchup should be no different.
Sparks -2 (-112)
The Sparks (2-3) snapped a three-game losing skid on Sunday with a 91-78 win over the Sky, powered by Kelsey Plum’s 28-point performance. Plum is averaging 24.8 points per game and has been red-hot from beyond the arc.
Atlanta (3-2) has won two straight at home but is banged up entering this road trip. Brittney Griner and Te-Hina PaoPao both missed the Dream’s Sunday win, but PaoPao is set to return.
If Plum continues her efficient scoring and L.A. can replicate its third-quarter explosion (33 points), the Sparks should be able to cover this narrow spread at home.
“I’m just trying to take what the defense gives me, trying to be patient,” Plum said on the Spectrum SportsNet broadcast. “I’ve got to be better, I’ve got to have better ball security, make better decisions.”
“Stick with us. I promise we’ll make this happen,” Plum added.
Mercury -6.5 (-115)
Phoenix (3-1) has opened the season strong, particularly at home, where it remains undefeated. The Mercury ground out a 68-62 win over Washington on Sunday despite shooting just 33.3% from the field.
Their defense has carried the load, forcing 29 turnovers in that win. Chicago (0-3) continues to be plagued by giveaways, averaging a league-worst 19.0 turnovers per game.
With Satou Sabally and Monique Akoa Makani both producing solid performances, and Kahleah Copper still sidelined, Phoenix has enough depth and defensive pressure to cover against a young Sky team still searching for stability.
“Our defense won us that game,” Phoenix coach Nate Tibbetts said.
“Just playing in front of this crowd, it’s special. It’s not like this everywhere,” Tibbetts added.
