After wrapping up the final event of the season in Texas, the PGA TOUR heads to Ohio for another Signature Event. The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday is held every year at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. This is another Signature Event, which means many of the biggest names in golf will tee it up this week at “Jack’s Place.” To help get you hyped for another fun week of golf and preview an iconic venue, let’s take a look at the history of the event and the overall course layout this week.
The History
Jack Nicklaus founded and hosted this event in 1976, and it has continued ever since at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Nicklaus founded Muirfield Village, which is its own neighborhood centered on the golf course. The inspiration for the Nicklaus-designed course was Muirfield Village in Scotland, where he claimed his first of three career victories at The Open Championship in 1966.
With Nicklaus as its host and a beautiful course layout, it has been one of the most prestigious events in the PGA TOUR rotation. It is also one of the longest-running events held at the same course for its entire history.
Last year, this was one of the many wins collected by Scottie Scheffler, who was already up to five victories when he held on to beat Collin Morikawa by a single stroke. PGA TOUR veteran Adam Hadwin was third after fading with three straight bogeys to close the tournament. The past winners are some of the biggest names in golf over the past several years with Scheffler joining Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau, Hideki Matsuyama and Patrick Cantlay twice as recent winners.
This year, since it is a Signature Event, it will be a limited-field event with around 72 golfers in the field. Since it is one of the player-hosted Signature Events, it features a 36-hole cut to the top-50 and ties plus any player within 10 shots of the lead.
This is the seventh of the eight Signature Events on the schedule this season, with the final one coming up in under a month at the Travelers Championship. Since it’s a Signature Event, it also has an increased prize pool of $20 million and will award 700 FedExCup points to the winner.
A Closer Look at the Course
Muirfield Village Golf Club is a par-72 layout that can stretch over 7,500 yards. It demands a well-rounded performance across multiple facets of the game. It is especially tough tee-to-green and the rough is always very thick and penalizing. Firm greens and difficult approach shots make it a shot-maker’s course, and the course usually plays as one of the most difficult relative to par in the regular rotation.
Nicklaus said he designed the course to test players with a variety of situations and kinds of shots — “The whole gamut of all shots is what the game of golf is all about. The game should challenge every facet of every club in the bag.” Since the course does a great job of that, it isn’t surprising that the top overall golfers in the world usually finish high on the leaderboard.

This is an in-depth look at the last major renovation Jack Nicklaus made three years ago. Last year, Nicklaus tweaked the par-3 16th after only 21 birdies were made in four rounds in 2023, but the rest of the course remained the same. This year, there were no major changes.
