The Cincinnati Reds, sitting just three games under .500, face the Kansas City Royals in a matchup at Kauffman Stadium on Monday. The Reds are coming off a 6-4 victory over the Cubs on Saturday before losing again Sunday, snapping a three-game skid in process. Meanwhile, the Royals dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Minnesota and have now lost three of their last four. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Monday night baseball game between the Royals and the Reds.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Royals vs. Reds prediction, preview
Nick Martinez, despite his 2-5 record, is quietly putting together solid outings for Cincinnati. With a 3.43 ERA and 1.14 WHIP, Martinez has allowed just four home runs in 57.2 innings, limiting damage in a hitter-friendly environment. His command has been pinpoint, walking just 13 batters while striking out 43. Martinez’s ability to induce soft contact, reflected in his 13.5% K-rate and 51.5% ground ball rate, plays perfectly into the Royals’ struggles. Kansas City’s offense is one of the least explosive in baseball, ranking 27th in runs scored and 30th in home runs. This sets up a favorable situation for Martinez to keep Kansas City at bay.
On the other hand, Michael Lorenzen has had a more inconsistent campaign for the Royals. His 3.77 ERA and 1.27 WHIP are solid, but Lorenzen has been hammered in three of his last four starts, surrendering 24 hits and 11 earned runs in just 23.2 innings. His command has faltered with nine home runs allowed, contributing to a 1.82 HR/9 rate. Lorenzen’s 3.16 K/BB ratio is respectable, but against a Reds lineup that thrives on extra-base power (they’re 9th in runs, 54 home runs, and 154 extra-base hits), Lorenzen is vulnerable to the likes of Elly De La Cruz and Austin Hays, who both bring serious pop from the right side.
Speaking of De La Cruz—he’s been a force worthy of video game cover-art this season, with nine home runs and 38 RBIs. His ability to drive the ball and make things happen on the basepaths (17 stolen bases) has provided the Reds with much-needed consistency. De La Cruz is striking out at a 25% rate, but his wRC+ of 119 and .417 slugging percentage speak to his overall ability to impact the game. Hays, slashing .324 with a .519 slugging percentage, has been an excellent complementary piece, hitting six homers and knocking in 24 RBIs. If Lorenzen struggles to keep the ball in the park, Hays and De La Cruz could very well make him pay.
Kansas City’s offense, however, remains a puzzle missing plenty of pieces. While Bobby Witt Jr. leads the team with 19 stolen bases and 28 RBIs, the Royals’ lack of power—32 home runs as a team, the worst mark in MLB—makes them dependent on pitching and small ball. Witt’s .299 batting average and Maikel Garcia’s .311 clip provide a decent foundation, but with Kansas City struggling to score (ranked 27th in runs) and Martinez limiting the long ball, this lineup is set to be stifled once again.
Reds vs. Royals pick, best bet
Defensively, Cincinnati’s pitching staff has been one of the best at limiting damage, sitting 5th in batting average against (.227) and 11th in ERA (3.68). The Reds’ bullpen, with a 3.80 ERA, has been a stable force, ensuring that Martinez’s quality start is protected. Kansas City’s bullpen, while solid (3.22 ERA), has not been as sharp as Cincinnati’s, and with Lorenzen likely to work into the middle innings, their late-game effectiveness could be tested.
Now, let’s talk betting: Kansas City is favored here, but their struggles against quality pitching and inconsistent offensive output make the Reds at +125 a very live underdog. Cincinnati has been the underdog in six of its last nine road games at Kauffman, with a 6-1 record during that stretch. With Martinez on the mound and the Royals’ inability to consistently produce runs, the Reds represent excellent value at this price.
Best bet: Reds (+105) at Royals
