Coming into the season, the Red Sox had multiple position player prospects right on the verge of making the team. The team ultimately gave their starting second base job to Kristian Campbell while sending super prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer to Triple-A. Mayer got off to a strong start, and on Saturday, the Red Sox will call him up to the majors for his debut, according to multiple reports, including ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Boston Red Sox are calling up infielder Marcelo Mayer, one of the top prospects in baseball, sources tell ESPN. With Alex Bregman injured, Boston needs infield help, and the 22-year-old Mayer — who’s hitting .271/.347/.471 at Triple-A — will get the first shot at his ABs.

Mayer was the No. 8 overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. The Red Sox drafted him No. 4 overall in the 2021 MLB Draft, and he has consistently climbed his way through the minor leagues. He dealt with a few injuries along the way but has been healthy so far in 2025.
He had not played in Triple-A until this season, when he was sent to the Worcester Red Sox for 43 games. Mayer hit .271 with 43 RBIs in his 43 games while smashing nine home runs and posting a .363 wOBA. He had two stolen bases in his two attempts, but he doesn’t typically run a lot.
Mayer is a classic “five-tool” prospect with a very well-rounded game and good plate approach. He doesn’t have a single standout attribute but can contribute across the board. He typically makes very good contact and has good plate discipline, which typically results in good run production and a solid batting average.
Defensively, Mayer is also versatile and can be an excellent defender at multiple positions. Most of his work in the minors has been at SS but he also played some 2B lately for Worcester. With Alex Bregman possibly headed for the injured list, Mayer could also get time at 3B. However, the Sox could also let the youngster play shortstop and let veteran infielder Trevor Story slide to either 2B or 3B as he has done in the past.
Fantasy Baseball Impact
The Red Sox wouldn’t be calling Marcelo Mayer up if they were not ready to give him an every day role. He could end up eligible at multiple positions and will likely produce a solid batting average, RBI, runs and some decent power. He will be joining a well-stocked lineup that has the upside to be one of the best in the majors.
In standard-sized mixed leagues, Mayer is a solid pickup, although he doesn’t have elite power or speed, so you don’t have to break the bank to add him. If you need solid production from an infield spot, though, Mayer is definitely worth a look.
In dynasty or AL-only leagues, Mayer has even more value and is definitely worth rostering in most formats.
The Red Sox are .500 at 26-26 in their first 52 games of the season coming into Saturday’s doubleheader. They are currently +500 to win the AL East and +135 to make the playoffs. Mayer’s arrival is a huge step for the future of the franchise and gives the team another big young prospect to watch grow as they look to stay afloat while Alex Bregman is on the injured list.
