It’s no surprise then that the Guardians own an expected win-loss record of 24-26. To keep this solid Tigers offense at bay, Cleveland will hand the ball to Luis Ortiz. It’s been an up-and-down season for the right-hander. Through 48.1 innings of work, he’s recorded a 4.66 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 56 strikeouts.
That’s not the case for the Tigers, who have actually underperformed (34-18 xW-L). A surprisingly good lineup has gotten major contributions from Spencer Torkelson (148 wRC+), Riley Greene (141 wRC+), and even Javier Baez (129 wRC+). In addition, Detroit possesses an intimidating collection of pitching that extends far beyond the rotation. Look no further than its 3.28 bullpen ERA, fifth-best in baseball.

The Tigers have now lost four of their last seven games; is this a regression to the mean? I’m not so sure; almost every advanced metric is buying Detroit’s fast start. As previously mentioned, that’s not the case for the Guardians. For tonight, it’s hard to generate much enthusiasm for Cleveland with a middling arm such as Ortiz. Over 5.2 career innings vs. the Tigers, he’s allowed four runs (4.76 ERA).
Although the Tigers haven’t announced a starter, their bullpen is strong enough to slow down most offenses. After reeling off two straight wins in this series, it’s difficult to imagine the Guardians doing so again. Expect Detroit to get back on track in a favorable pitching matchup.
