Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners prediction, pick for Friday 5/23/25

Tonight’s matchup at Daikin Park brings us another intriguing AL West showdown after a blowout last night. The Astros send Ryan Gusto (3-2, 4.64 ERA) to the mound against Emerson Hancock (1-2, 6.21 ERA) for the Mariners. Houston’s offense came alive in the opener (which we did not expect!), but tonight’s game offers an intriguing contrast with two pitchers who have been wishy-washy this season. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Friday night baseball game between the Astros and the Mariners.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Astros vs. Mariners prediction, preview

Recent form clearly favors the Astros. They’ve won three of their last four home games and have dominated Seattle in their last few matchups at home, including a 9-2 rout. Ryan Gusto, despite his 4.64 ERA, has been steady enough at home, posting a 3.42 ERA in Houston compared to his 6.38 road ERA. He will need to limit walks and avoid mistakes against a Mariners lineup that can capitalize on free passes and mistakes.

On the other hand, Hancock has struggled with command, evident in his 1.68 WHIP and 6.21 ERA. The Mariners’ starter has given up seven home runs this season and has walked 12 in just 33.1 innings. Facing a powerful Astros offense, Hancock is in for a tough night. The Mariners’ offense, averaging just 4.67 runs per game, hasn’t been able to sustain consistent output lately. Missing key contributors like Julio Rodríguez (scratched last night with back tightness) tonight, the Mariners’ offense has already been in a cooling holding pattern, posting a disappointing 85 wRC+ over the last two weeks.

When it comes to key players, Houston’s Isaac Paredes has been the major contributor. He leads the team with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs. Jake Meyers has been on fire, hitting .324 over his last 10 games with a double, a home run, and three walks. Meanwhile, Seattle’s Cal Raleigh, who leads the team with 16 home runs and 33 RBIs, will need to continue his hot streak if the Mariners hope to keep up with the Astros’ offensive firepower. Ty France is doing Ty France things, and there’s a small shot J-Rod will return soon, considering he’s only day-to-day. But we’ll need updates there.

Countering Seattle’s pitching woes, the Astros’ bullpen has been one of the most effective in the league with a 3.45 ERA, while Seattle’s bullpen, despite solid numbers, faces the risk of being overused. If Hancock can’t go deep into the game, the Mariners will rely heavily on a bullpen that has been taxed during this road trip.

Mariners vs. Astros pick, best bet

The Mariners, despite being solid underdogs in recent games, have not fared well historically in Houston. The Astros smashed wins in nine of their last 10 home games against them after a loss. The Mariners’ road success has been a highlight this season—sure. But Hancock’s inconsistencies give Houston an edge, especially after their explosive showing in the opener. The total has also been a reliable under in recent head-to-head matchups between these two teams, with seven of the last nine meetings staying under the total runs line.

The Astros are playing in front of their home crowd and with a slight edge in starting pitching. We know what that means. They should continue their momentum from last night’s dominating win. Gusto, despite his high ERA, is a better fit for this matchup compared to Hancock. He just folds in key moments. With Paredes, Meyers, and Altuve leading the charge, Houston is poised to extend its recent dominance at home against Seattle.

Having said that, the under feels like the smart move in this game, with both teams relying on pitching depth and start-and-stop offense. While both starters have their flaws, the game likely stays close with bullpen reinforcements limiting scoring after the early innings. All the good arms appear to be rested and healthy, so the score shouldn’t move much after the fifth.

Best bet: Astros vs. Mariners under 8.5 total runs (+100)
