The Tigers and Guardians are set for an electrifying battle at Comerica Park, where Detroit seeks to build on their commanding lead in the AL Central as these two rivals meet for the first time. Detroit has established itself as the class of the division, sitting at a stellar 33-17 record. Meanwhile, Cleveland is in the thick of the race at 26-22 but needs to find consistency to stay in the hunt. The first game of this four-game series features two right-handers, Tanner Bibee for the Guardians and Jack Flaherty for the Tigers. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Thursday night baseball game between the Tigers and the Guardians.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Tigers vs. Guardians prediction, preview
Bibee enters the game with a 4.06 ERA, and while that’s solid, his 4.69 xFIP suggests regression is on the horizon. Bibee’s tendency to give up the long ball—11 home runs over 51 innings—is a concerning trend. On top of that, he’s allowed a .292 batting average on the road this season, which aligns with the Tigers’ potent offense that ranks fifth in wRC+ (115) and ninth in slugging percentage (.423). Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene have been lighting it up, with Greene raking at .287 and ranking ninth in the majors for home runs (12). Torkelson, tied with Greene for the team lead, has also finally been providing some verve with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs. Their ability to exploit Bibee’s vulnerabilities makes this a matchup worth watching.
Flaherty, on the other hand, hasn’t been much better, carrying a 4.44 ERA into this one. While he holds a solid strikeout rate of 28.9%, his 3.34 xFIP suggests he’s been a little unlucky. However, Flaherty has limited opponents to a .237 average this season, and with Cleveland ranking near the bottom in slugging and OBP, he could be in line for a decent outing. His high strikeout rate will come in handy against a Guardians’ lineup that struggles with strikeouts—they rank fifth in the league for the most strikeouts per game. But, Flaherty’s own inconsistency makes him vulnerable, especially if the Guardians’ more experienced hitters like Jose Ramirez, who’s hitting .296 with nine pops, can settle into the game.
Cleveland’s offense has underperformed recently. Over the last 10 games, the Guardians are 21st in OPS (.634) and 17th in wRC+ (98). Still, players like Steven Kwan, batting .317 with 60 hits, have the ability to heat up at any time. Kwan’s ability to get on base will be pivotal, as Flaherty has struggled with controlling batters—his 4.2 BB/9 is one of the higher rates among qualified starters. This gives Cleveland an edge in terms of base runners, which could translate into scoring opportunities.
Guardians vs. Tigers pick, best bet
While both pitchers have shown flashes of brilliance, the offenses have proven to be a bigger factor here. With both starting pitchers prone to giving up runs, and the Tigers boasting a significantly better offense, the value lies in the over for the first five innings. Detroit has hit the over in four of their last five games at Comerica, and considering their potent lineup and Cleveland’s offensive upside, we should expect early runs. The Guardians have also been involved in high-scoring games recently, and with Bibee’s issues on the road, it’s hard to imagine this being a low-scoring affair early on.
With all this in mind, lock in the over 3.5 runs for the first five innings. The pitching has been inconsistent, the offenses are heating up, and this game sets up for an explosive start.
Best bet: Tigers vs. Guardians o3.5 runs F5 (-150)
