The Hurricanes are facing their first real adversity this postseason after being dismantled, 5-2, in Game 1 by the Panthers. Luckily, they are 2-0 this postseason coming off a loss and haven’t lost back-to-back games since mid-April. Thanks to its strong play on home ice, Carolina is a -130 favorite on the Moneyline on DraftKings Sportsbook for tonight’s Game 2 tilt. The game total is set at O/U 5.5 goals with a lean to the under as of writing. The starting goaltender matchup will be the same as Game 1––Frederik Andersen vs. Sergei Bobrovsky.

Hurricanes vs. Panthers Game 2 preview, analysis
The Eastern Conference Final is a scary place for the Hurricanes. Since 2019, they’ve made it to the ECF three times––want to guess how many wins they’ve had in that span? Well, the answer is zero after being swept in four games by the Bruins in 2019 and the Panthers in 2023. And, Game 1 on Tuesday was a nightmare for the Carolina. Despite a clear rest advantage and higher 5v5 expected goal percentage in Game 1, it still lost, 5-2, which is scary business when facing a team like Florida.
The good thing is it’s only Game 2 and the Hurricanes can still even the series tonight at home. They posted a 31-9-1 regular-season home record and have gone 5-1 this postseason. Andersen had an off-game, too, allowing five goals on just 20 shots, and a bounce-back game tonight feels likely. So far this postseason, the Hurricanes rank second in shots per game, fourth in power play percentage and fifth in 5v5 goal percentage. There’s no denying that Carolina has the tools to succeed––it just comes down to whether it can put it all together against a complete Florida team that has found its groove over the past week or so.
The Panthers looked beatable when the Maple Leafs took an early 2-0 second-round series lead but it’s safe to say that Game 2 loss flipped a switch for the defending Cup champions. When Florida puts it together at all levels of the ice, it is nearly unstoppable, and that is what happened in Game 1 on Tuesday. It converted 2-of-3 power play opportunities, matched Carolina’s physicality and elite defense with 41 hits and 21 blocked shots and received stellar goaltending from Bobrovsky. Since the Game 2 loss on May 7 to Toronto, Bobrovsky has been one of the best goaltenders this postseason. In that span, he has posted a .920 save percentage to go along with a postseason-low 1.96 GAA.
Florida’s postseason metrics are stellar, too. It ranks second in both 5v5 goal percentage and 5v5 goals above expected, and has maintained consistent special teams play, ranking seventh in power play percentage and first in penalty kill percentage. All in all, these teams match up well on paper, but the Panthers have the edge in playoff experience, quality of depth and quite frankly, coaching.
Hurricanes vs. Panthers Game 2 prediction, pick
Let me be clear that I made a grave mistake in Game 1 by fading the Panthers for possibly the first time all season. 53% of the bets and 58% of the money are on Panthers Moneyline (+110) tonight, and I’ll be joining the public. I expect a bounce-back game for Andersen but also some desperate play from the Hurricanes, which may open up some high-quality chances for the Panthers throughout the game. Florida looked strong even with a rest disadvantage and beat this Carolina squad in 2-of-3 games during the regular season. There really might be an Eastern Conference Final curse on the Hurricanes, and I’m no fan of curses in professional sports.
