What happened to Jonah Heim? Live injury updates for Rangers vs. Yankees 5/21/25

In the top of the second inning of Wednesday’s game between the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, Jonah Heim notched a single but likely suffered an injury on the swing. When he came out to catch in the bottom of the inning, he was unable to grip the ball and throw to second base. He has been replaced by Tucker Barnhart.

In 136 plate appearances this season, Heim is slashing .262/.309/.429 with a 5.9% walk rate, 20.6% strikeout rate and .167 ISO. He has six home runs and three stolen bases. That places him seventh among catchers for home runs and tied for second in stolen bases.

Barnhart has only accrued 11 plate appearances this season. While he’s slashing .333/.455/.333 in that small sample size, he has a career ISO of .110, so it’s a significant downgrade at the position.
