Logan O’Hoppe ($3,700) entered Wednesday’s game against the Athletics with 11 home runs, second-most among catchers, trailing Cal Raleigh by only three. The 11 home runs were tied for seventh among all MLB players.
On Wednesday, he hit two home runs in his first two plate appearances. It’s still only the fourth inning as of the time of this writing, so he likely has a couple of more plate appearances to add to the total.
In the top of the second innings, with the game scoreless, O’Hoppe smashed a low-and-outside changeout into the left field seats for a two-run jack.
Two innings later, with the score 4-3 in favor of the Angels, O’Hoppe took the first pitch for a strike. He then fouled off a fastball before laying off a high-and-tight fastball for a ball. On the fourth pitch of the at-bat, an 80 mph sweeper caught too much of the plate and O’Hoppe delivered that one into the left field seats as well.
The power is no fluke, as O’Hoppe has a career .197 ISO. Entering Wednesday’s game, he was boasting a .236 ISO. He may strikeout a ton, but when he puts bat to ball, it travels a long way. O’Hoppe has an average exit velocity of 91.2 mph with a maxEV of 111.1 mph.
