With the Western Conference Finals tipping off Tuesday night in Oklahoma City, the spotlight turns to two of the brightest stars in the NBA: Anthony Edwards and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

At first glance, giving Edwards a 5.5-point cushion might seem generous considering Gilgeous-Alexander’s playoff average of 29.0 points per game. However, there’s reason to believe this could be a competitive play.
Edwards is averaging 26.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 5.9 assists in 10 playoff games, and he’s done it while taking on some of the league’s most experienced teams. He scored 36 points in his most recent outing to close out the Warriors in Game 5, and he’s grown more efficient as the playoffs have progressed.
SGA’s production speaks for itself, but he’s now set to face a Timberwolves defense that ranks second in postseason defensive rating (106.8), anchored by Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels. In last year’s play-in game, Nickeil Alexander-Walker helped hold Gilgeous-Alexander, his cousin, to just 5-of-19 shooting. That same matchup could resurface Tuesday.
“This series will be different,” Wolves coach Chris Finch said. “Both teams are elite defensively and have seen everything in the first two rounds. It’s about making the fewest mistakes.”
Gilgeous-Alexander acknowledged the emotional component of facing Alexander-Walker again: “It’s hard to even explain. He’s literally like my second brother. For both of us to be where we are is special — but I am trying to take his head off for sure.”
While SGA remains the more prolific scorer overall, the 5.5-point cushion on Edwards may offer value, especially considering his recent momentum and his team’s defensive scheme to limit SGA’s clean looks.
Edwards has the volume, matchup, and motivation to keep things close — or even win this prop outright. The +5.5 points provide a substantial buffer in what should be a grind-it-out series opener.
