Will NFL owners vote to ban the “Tush Push”?

At this week’s NFL league meeting, the owners will vote on a proposal to ban the “Tush Push,” a play that has been popularized with devastating efficiency by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Green Bay Packers initially proposed the ban back in March but were only able to muster 16 votes in favor. 24 votes are needed for the proposal to pass.

Since then, the Packers have updated the language on the Tush Push ban:

NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger did an excellent job of breaking down the “Brotherly Shove” and showing why it’s so effective:

Green Bay’s president/CEO Mark Murphy said that, “There is no skill involved. It is an automatic first down on plays of a yard or less.”

Since the Eagles started utilizing the play back in 2022, the success rate has actually declined over the years, from 90% to 88.1% and 82.4% last season.

There have been other teams that have attempted to execute the play, but no one has able to replicate the success of the Eagles. Head coach Nick Sirianni said, “We work really, really [hard]. I almost feel a little insulted because we work so hard at the play. The amount of things that we’ve looked into how to coach the play, the fundamentals. There’s a thousand plays out there, but it comes down to how you teach the fundamentals and how the players go through and do the fundamentals. I can’t tell you how many times we practiced the snap. We practice the play because it’s not a play that’s easy to practice, so there’s different ways we figured out how to practice it.”

Here are but a few examples of other teams failing at the so-called unstoppable play:
