The Los Angeles Angels shocked the Dodgers, winning the first two games of this Freeway Series with an explosive offensive display. However, while the Angels’ performance has been impressive, the law of regression is in play for Sunday’s finale. Doesn’t it, Dodgers bettors?! Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday baseball game between the Padres and the Mariners.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Dodgers vs. Angels prediction, preview
Their .219 batting average ranks third-lowest in the league, and their xWOBACON (expected weighted on-base average on contact) suggests they are due for a cooling off period. Meanwhile, the Dodgers will have their ace, Tony Gonsolin (2.81 ERA), on the mound. Gonsolin has been a force this season, boasting an exceptional 95th percentile hard-hit rate and a whiff rate in the 98th percentile, putting him in prime position to stifle the Angels’ attack.
And it’ll need to be a stifling, indeed. Taylor Ward leads the Halos with 11 home runs and 23 RBIs. Ward’s exit velocity on flyballs has increased to 98.6 mph. That’s potent power. However, Zach Neto (batting .275) and Logan O’Hoppe (.230) have hardly been reliable, struggling against top-tier pitching. Neto’s strikeout rate (27%) underscores his vulnerability against Gonsolin’s high K-rate. The Angels’ team wRC+ of 82 against right-handers this season highlights their offensive inconsistency—pointing to another challenging day against a resurgent Gonsolin.
On the other hand, Yusei Kikuchi’s solid superficial ratios betray some concerning advanced metrics. His 3.72 ERA is deceiving given his 1.47 WHIP and diminished strikeout rate of just 8%. Against a high-octane Dodgers lineup, which ranks first in the league for batting average (.274) and slugging percentage (.481), Kikuchi’s vulnerabilities will be exposed. The Dodgers have hit .298 off Kikuchi in 94 at-bats, with a .532 slugging percentage, indicating they’ve seen him well in past matchups. As Kikuchi continues to struggle with his command (especially a 10.4% walk rate), this should bode poorly for the Angels’ pitching staff today.
The Dodgers’ offense is coming off some duds, but their 5.76 runs per game (second in MLB) and 12 home runs in their last six games illustrate their ability to put runs on the board in a hurry, especially in bounceback spots like today’s. With Freddie Freeman leading the charge (.375 BA, 34 RBIs) and Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani providing elite protection, the Dodgers’ offense should surge against Kikuchi.
Angels vs. Dodgers pick, best bet
Defensively, the Angels have been average at best, ranking 25th in team ERA and 28th in WHIP. With a bullpen ERA of 5.02 and 1.49 WHIP, their lack of depth will be exposed as the Dodgers’ offense grinds them down. The Dodgers also benefit from a strong bullpen, currently ranked sixth in MLB for bullpen effectiveness. This will be key once the starters are out of the game, ensuring the Angels have a hard time keeping pace.
We can get niche-y with the trends. the Dodgers are 9-0 in their last 9 day games against AL West opponents following a loss, while the Angels have lost six of their last seven day games after playing the previous day. Additionally, the Dodgers have covered the run line in 12 of their last 14 home games against AL West opponents following a loss. With a much stronger lineup, a superior pitcher on the mound, and favorable betting trends, the Dodgers are set to bounce back and avoid a series sweep at home.
For those looking to back a strong performance from the Dodgers, Tony Gonsolin’s recent form and Kikuchi’s regression make the Dodgers’ run line (-1.5) a confident play.
Best bet: Dodgers -1.5 (-120) vs. Angels
