The Giants and Athletics enter this contest in divisional dogfights, but in very different ways.
Both squads are a handful of games away from leading their division. The difference is the quality of the divisions. If the Giants were in the AL West, they’d be atop the division. If the Athletics were in the NL West, they’d be nearly 10 games behind. Regardless of their general quality of their opponents, these games are equally meaningful to both squads.
The Giants enter at -148 on the moneyline on DraftKings Sportsbook. The run total is set at 8.5. Let’s take a look at the best bets for Sunday’s game.
Pick and Prediction
Over 8.5 Total (-108)
This is going to be a contest of two struggling pitchers. For the Athletics, Jeffrey Springs has been middling. He’s not missing bats and issuing too many walks, which never bodes well. This Giants lineup has been rolling and is a top 10 scoring unit in baseball.
For the Giants, Justin Verlander is not the pitcher he used to be. It’s understandable for a 42-year-old, sure. However, it’s a problem. His 1.35 WHIP is of significant concern, as it is uncharacteristic for a pitcher that led the entire league just three years ago. He’s been especially susceptible to the big inning which could be a problem against a quality A’s lineup.
I’d expect a high-scoring matinee in this one. Bet it accordingly.
