The 49ers and Brock Purdy have officially agreed to a five-year contract extension to keep him in San Francisco for the foreseeable future. This five-year contract is worth up to $265 million and holds $181 million in guarantees, making him the seventh highest paid quarterback in the NFL.
This is quite the climb for the former Mr. Irrelevant as San Francisco officially declares him the franchise quarterback. Purdy made $3.74 million across his four-year rookie contract and is now in line to earn $53 million per year.
Purdy has made the most of his opportunity and has capitalized to the fullest extent. He first received an opportunity to step in as the starting quarterback due to injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. Purdy played nine games in 2022 before stepping in as the full-time starter in 2023.
Across his first season as San Francisco’s starter, Purdy led the 49ers to a 12-4 record. He threw for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while leading the NFL in touchdown percentage, yards per completion and QBR.
Purdy took a step back last season, but injuries to key players could take some of the blame. Across 15 games, the Iowa State product threw for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The 49ers went just 6-11 on the season and missed the playoffs. Purdy dealt with a right elbow contusion and nerve inflammation in Week 17 against Detroit. He also suffered a torn UCL in his throwing arm during the playoffs against the Eagles the year prior, which required surgery to fix.
Clearly, the 49ers are not concerned about his statistical regression or elbow issues and have paid him to be the franchise quarterback. The organization made some significant roster changes this offseason and believes it will contend for a Super Bowl again in 2025.
San Francisco enters this year as the favorites to win the NFC West at +145 odds. It also is +950 to win the NFC and +2000 to win the Super Bowl on DraftKings Sportsbook.
