Things are starting to take shape after the second round of the PGA Championship on Friday, as some familiar names charged up the leaderboard.
Bryson DeChambeau was out early this morning and played much better than he did on Thursday, as he fired a three-under 68 to get himself into contention. DeChambeau was bogey-free with two birdies on the back nine before draining three more birdies on the front compared to two bogeys. He currently sits at T17 and is five shots back of the lead.
Scottie Scheffler is the other big name who surged on Friday, as he also posted a second-round 68 to get himself to T5 and three back. He made just one bogey on his round compared to four birdies. Scheffler also inexplicably missed a three-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that would have gotten him to six-under for the tournament and tied for second. Nonetheless, he is still the betting favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook at +200.
Our leader remained the same after the second round, as Jhonattan Vegas continued his impressive tournament with a one-under 70 on Friday. He currently holds a one-shot lead over a triumvirate of players that include Matt Fitzpatrick and Si Woo Kim. Speaking of Kim, he tied for the low-round of the day after firing a 64, which included a hole-in-one on the very difficult par-3 6th hole.
Max Homa was the other golfer who tied for the low-round of the day. He made six birdies and an eagle on his round to get to five-under for the tournament and three shots back. Quail Hollow has always been kind to Homa in the past, so this is not a surprise to see him in contention, even despite his recent struggles.
Rory McIlroy struggled for the second straight day, especially over his final two holes where he tried desperately to miss the cut. He first missed a three-foot par putt on 17, before cranking his drive off the roof of a tent on 18 and almost hitting the creek. McIlroy ultimately got up and down to save bogey and make the cut on the number at one-over par. His issues with the driver were evident again on Friday, and he will need to get it together over the weekend if he has any intention of finishing inside the top 10.
