Twins’ management and fans collectively held their breath during the third inning of Thursday’s afternoon tilt between Minnesota and Baltimore. On a Cedric Mullins pop-up to center, Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton collided. The always injury-prone Buxton was initially able to remain in the game, yet he did not come back out for the fourth inning. Correa was removed immediately, with Brooks Lee taking over at short and Jonah Bride entering the Twins’ lineup.
It’s certainly a dark cloud that now hangs over what has otherwise been an amazing stretch of baseball for Minnesota, who entered today’s tilt on a 10-game winning streak. Correa’s been a huge part of the team’s turnaround, too. The veteran infielder was awful to begin the season, yet Correa was hitting .300 across his first 41 plate appearances in May. That includes five hits in his past three starts. Correa was also very good in an injury-shortened 2024 campaign, slashing .310/.388/.517 with a 155 wRC+ in 86 games.
Meanwhile, Buxton has arguably been the Twins’ best hitter this season. After hitting his 10th home run earlier in the day on Thursday, Buxton now owns a 130 wRC+ and a .261 ISO in his 174 plate appearances.
