After a shutout victory in Game 4 on Monday night, the Edmonton Oilers now sit firmly in the driver’s seat of their Stanley Cup Playoffs series against the Vegas Golden Knights. Just one win away from their second consecutive Western Conference Final appearance, the Oilers travel to Sin City for tonight’s Game 5. While the odds of a Golden Knights comeback from down 3-1 look quite slim, anything can happen.
First, though, Vegas must win tonight to keep their season alive. Here’s a Golden Knights vs. Oilers prediction and pick for Game 5 ahead of the 9:30 p.m. EST puck drop.
Golden Knights vs. Oilers prediction, pick for Game 5
Despite falling to Edmonton in a 3-0 shutout last game, the Golden Knights still enter Wednesday’s contest as -120 favorites to win on the Moneyline, though they’re a somewhat long +195 to cover the -1.5 puck line. As for the Oilers, the team sits at +100 on the Moneyline with -238 odds to keep the game within one score or win outright. The total for both teams sits at 6.5 combined goals.
The Oilers come into this game with all the momentum in the world. Against all odds, goaltender Stuart Skinner managed a shutout in Game 4 despite his paltry prior postseason play this year. He and the team should be energized after that performance, and they look to slam the door shut in this one tonight.
It’s worth noting that Edmonton rode contributions from unlikely sources in their Game 4 win. Adam Henrique scored two goals while Evander Kane netted one as well — Connor McDavid tallied just one point on an assist while Leon Draisaitl didn’t score at all. The Oilers can’t count on these contributions from non-stars on a consistent basis, but it feels likely that at least one of their top two players lights the goal tonight.
Vegas netminder Adin Hill’s 3.15 GAA ranks fourth-to-last among remaining playoff goalies with at least one start, while his .876 SV% falls third-worst among the same sample. He’s just not stopping shots, plain and simple.
The atmosphere in Vegas’ home barn remains intimidating and should give the team a boost tonight, so there’s a part of me that wants to say the Golden Knights come out and stave off elimination in Game 5. However, they’re clearly outmatched on offense, and with Mark Stone again doubtful to play, the end appears nigh for the Knights.
Best bet: 60 Min Line: EDM Oilers (+160)
