The wait is finally over! Dana White announced Tuesday night that Khamzat Chimaev is fighting for his first championship against Middleweight Champion Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 319 on August 16 in Chicago, Illinois. Du Plessis has been on fire, winning three title fights in the last 16 months.
In this matchup, the challenger Chimaev is the favorite at -198, as the champion is +164 on DraftKings Sportsbook.
After Du Plessis beat Sean Strickland at UFC 312 in February, fans have been clamoring for this matchup as it is one of the best the UFC can currently make. From the second Chimaev stepped into the UFC, he had future champion written all over him. He is 8-0 In the promotion, with six finishes. Chimaev most recently submitted former champion Robert Whittaker in the first round at UFC 308.
Du Plessis’ resume is stacked with three former champions, and he has the chance to be the one to defeat the unbeatable Chimaev. This is Du Plessis’ fourth straight title fight and third defense. He hasn’t lost a fight since October 2018. So far, this is the only fight announced for UFC 319.
