It’s unfortunate the NFL cultural triumph that was the first-year-Harbaugh Los Angeles Chargers can be reduced to a single stat for a single game: four interceptions for Justin Herbert against the Houston Texans. It was an inexcusable performance for a player not just of Herbert’s pedigree but also his expectations, and it was just as staggering to watch an individual performance self-destruct an entire team that’d spent the entire year establishing themselves as a formidable unit. Herbert, quite literally, threw the season away.
Their run game wasn’t as strong as Harbaugh wanted it to be in 2024, so they went out and signed FA Najee Harris and drafted rookie RB Omarion Hampton out of North Carolina. This is some serious thunder behind an offensive line that saw 2024 first-round pick, Joe Alt, anchor Justin Herbert’s left side. They also added beefy G Mekhi Becton to improve the interior.
Ladd McConkey still doesn’t have much contested-catch-receiver help outside of rookie WR Tre Harris out of Ole Miss, but they likely didn’t upgrade enough at tight end: Tyler Conklin and fifth-round draft pick Oronde Gadsen II aren’t likely to be the difference-makers.
The Chargers seem satisfied with their defense, as they only drafted one EDGE (Kyle Kennard) and otherwise made some mezza-mezza defensive front signings. A lot has to go right for this team to take all these pieces and make a deep playoff run, but if anyone can lead them to it, Harbaugh can. He’s the quarterback whisperer. Herbert bounceback year.
