The Las Vegas Raiders turned some heads to start last season, but things quickly collapsed as they finished 4-13 to end the campaign. With an offense which seemed allergic to scoring points due to a litany of issues from poor quarterback play to a lack of real ground-game threats, plus a struggling defense devoid of true playmakers, Las Vegas turned their sights to the future after just a few weeks.
Now, that future looks within reach. While the Raiders aren’t going to compete for a Super Bowl any time soon, the path to real improvement appears clear. An offseason trade for Geno Smith brings an underrated veteran to quarterback the offensive attack, and while the eighth-overall pick remains a steep price for a halfback, Ashton Jeanty possesses the makings of the NFL’s next superstar rusher. Between these upgrades, the emergence of Brock Bowers as a star tight end and Pete Carroll coming to serve as head coach, the Raiders’ offense looks feisty. The defense should improve with better coaching, and while they probably aren’t a real contender, Las Vegas should surprise folks with a competitive campaign.
