If last year’s any indication, the regular season schedule doesn’t exactly matter for this era of Kansas City Chiefs. They’re just going to make the playoffs, and they’re likely going to be so infuriatingly excellent at finding ways to win that they’ll make a solid run in the postseason, too. Hard to believe we consider it whatsoever a disappointment that the Chiefs didn’t complete the three-peat, but I haven’t seen Reid, Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones, Travis Kelce, & co. more crestfallen than after the Eagles won the Super Bowl this year.
Speaking of Chris Jones and Travis Kelce—the reality about those two players is one that’s going to catch up to the Chiefs more broadly. They’re getting older. For Mahomes, that hasn’t had any material affect on his own play. Neither Jones. But it was clear Travis Kelce lost a step last year, and that was the central reason the Chiefs’ offense floundered around him. They never seemed to find consistent playmakers. They’re just full of assets who make key plays.
No reason to expect this team to get any worse, especially with the concerted effort to strengthen its offensive line after they traded away Joe Thuney. Chiefs Kingdom reigns on.
