I’ve seen plenty of folks say that the best thing you can say about the Bears headed into the 2025 campaign is that it can’t get much worse than 2024. And while that’s mostly true, it doesn’t at all celebrate what an unbelievably promising offseason the Bears had. It began with the hiring of former Lions OC Ben Johnson as their new HC, and then all the dominoes started to fall. All the sudden the Bears have Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson, which addressed the most glaring weakness on the team: interior offensive line.
In taking that approach to free agency, the Bears headed into the 2025 draft with eyes on value and talent, not necessarily positional needs. There are many who argue they need a more consistent running back than D’Andre Swift. I, however, think D’Andre Swift could be a fine feature back behind a reasonable offensive line in this Ben Johnson system. You’ll recall Swift and Johnson are familiar with each other from their time in Detroit. And, though I think they reached on Colston Loveland in the draft, they added both Loveland and Luther Burden III to an already talent-saturated offensive group.
There’ll be no surprises with this team; there’ll only be expectations to surpass. That’s what happens when you take Caleb Williams last year, pay the best coaching candidate on the market, and invest in your offensive line. It’s winning time.
