Just before the Cincinnati Reds were set to play the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, infielder Noelvi Marte was scratched from the lineup.
The Reds did some shuffling of the lineup to accommodate for his absence. Austin Wynns, usually a catcher, went into the game at first base. First baseman Spencer Steer shifted to left field, and left fielder Santiago Espinal shifted to third base. It’s unclear if Marte’s injury is a one-off, or if an extended absence will be required.
Marte, 23, is a former top prospect in Cincinnati’s system. A PED-related suspension derailed his last campaign, and he never quite found himself at the plate. He’s been off to a great start this year with three home runs, four stolen bases and an .857 OPS. We will provide updates on his injury status as they come along.
