The PGA TOUR is hosting the Truist Championship this week, which is the PGA TOUR’s sixth of eight Signature Events this season. The Truist Championship will be played at the Wissahickon Course (par 70, 7,119 yards, bentgrass greens) of the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pennsylvania. This will be the venue’s first time hosting a PGA TOUR event and there will be 72 golfers competing at the Truist Championship. There will be no cut and, as a Signature Event, this tournament features all the PGA TOUR’s top players, except Scottie Scheffler, competing for a $20 million purse.
Below, I have featured some finishing position bets to consider for the Truist Championship.
Patrick Cantlay for a top 20 finish including ties (-150)
Cantlay should have one of his best finishes of the season this week and is an awesome bet for a top 20 finish. The veteran has finished inside the top 20 in five of his nine starts this season, two of which came at Signature Events. While the Wissahickon Course is new venue for all these players, this track sets up better for Cantlay than most. The Wissahickon Course is a classic par 70 that presents 12 par fours, and seven of these holes are between 400-450 yards in length. When we compare this field’s last 50 rounds, Cantlay ranks fourth in 400-450-yard par four efficiency.
More importantly, the Wissahickon Course features bentgrass greens and Cantlay is notorious for playing his best golf on this type of putting surface. Six of his eight PGA TOUR wins have come on bentgrass and Cantlay ranks third in strokes gained per round when we compare this field’s last 50 rounds at courses with bentgrass greens. Cantlay has gained strokes on approach in seven straight starts and if his flat stick can come alive on these bentgrass greens, Cantlay has a real chance to contend for his first win of the season.
Sam Stevens for a top 30 finish (+120)
Stevens made some serious noise at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson last week, finishing T3. During this season-best outing, the 28-year-old gained strokes in every major category at TPC Craig Ranch and he shot 65 or better in three of his four rounds, including a seven-under 64 on Sunday. Stevens has now finished inside the top 30 in five of his 15 starts this season and he ranks 15th on the PGA TOUR in par four performance, which is great news with a classic par 70 in the Wissahickon Course up next.
With 12 par fours at this standard par 70, scoring on the par fours will be most crucial for success at the Wissahickon Course. Stevens has finished T22 or better in four of his last eight starts at a par 70 and he has a great chance to finish inside the top 30 at the Wissahickon Course if he can any way replicate his performance from last week.
