Triston Casas will miss the rest of the season

On Friday night against the Twins, Red Sox 1B Triston Casas suffered a significant knee injury while trying to beat out an infield hit.

On Saturday, the team announced that Casas was placed on the 10-day IL with a left patellar tendon rupture. Red Sox president of baseball operations Craig Breslow told reporters that Casas will need knee surgery and miss the remainder of the season.

Casas was hitting just .182 on the season but was a regular part of the Red Sox lineup as the everyday 1B. He had three home runs and a .259 wOBA, but he has picked things up with a .412 wOBA over his last eight games.

Fantasy Baseball Impact

The injury leaves a huge hole in the Red Sox batting order, which could present a huge fantasy opportunity. Journeyman utilityman Romy Gonzalez will likely fill in for the short-term with Abraham Toro also in the mix.

Manager Alex Cora came out strongly against the idea of moving Rafael Devers out of the DH spot full time and Breslow dismissed the idea of sliding top prospects Roman Anthony or Marcelo Mayer to fill in the void.

The Red Sox definitely could make a move to bring in a big bat at 1B at the trade deadline if not sooner if they remain in the chase for the playoffs.
