Is Orioles’ top prospect Coby Mayo worth adding from waiver wires?

According to Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles are recalling Coby Mayo from Triple-A Norfolk to replace Ramon Urias (hamstring) on the active roster.

Mayo was ranked as the Orioles’ No. 2 prospect coming into the season by MLB Pipeline and the No. 12 prospect in all of baseball. The Orioles’ offense could definitely use a boost, and Mayo has the potential to be a key fantasy contributor down the stretch if he can translate his recent success to the majors.

Mayo didn’t earn a spot on the roster coming out of spring training and was vocally unhappy about going to the minors. He hit .252 in his 28 games in Norfolk this season and smashed six home runs with a .379 wOBA.

Mayo was a fourth-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft out of high school and has thrived throughout his rise to this point in the minors. Last year, he hit .293 in 93 minor-league games with 25 home runs and a .413 wOBA.

Last year, he played 17 games with the Orioles but struggled to just a .098 batting average, going 4-for-41 with no extra-base hits.

Fantasy baseball impact

The Orioles will hope the 23-year-old slugging third baseman will have much better results this time around. He instantly becomes one of the most exciting names on fantasy baseball waiver wires. He is on just 8% of Yahoo! rosters but has the power potential to be a difference-maker in a productive lineup.

Coby Mayo makes a great addition if you are looking for a fantasy baseball sleeper who brings potential in all the power categories. He isn’t necessarily a lock after his struggles last year, but his ceiling is immense.
