The Los Angeles Lakers have officially been eliminated from the NBA playoffs after losing the the Minnesota Timberwolves 4-1 in the opening round. During the Game 5 loss, LeBron James suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee, as reported by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
James will have plenty of time to begin his recovery process with the Lakers’ offseason having started sooner than they hoped. The injury is expected to hold a 3-5 week timeline.
If the Lakers had produced a victory and extended the series, James would have been unable to suit up for Game 6. This would have snapped a 292-game streak of playoff games without sitting out.
The injury occurred with 8:39 remaining in the fourth quarter during a collision with Donte DiVincenzo. The Timberwolves guard was whistled for a moving screen and James stayed down on the floor for an extended period.
James was forced to sub out of the game to have the knee looked at, but returned with 7:23 left to play and stayed on the floor for the remainder of the game.
It will be an interesting offseason in Los Angeles with James holding a $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, and he has teased his uncertain future. At 40 years old, James has not shown much sign of slowing down, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds across the regular season.
The mid-season trade for Luka Doncic shifted the outlook for the Lakers’ organization both in the short and long term. While life in the post-LeBron era looks much brighter than before, Los Angeles did not have the opportunity to properly shape their roster around the two stars due to the midseason timing of the trade. They will look to do so this offseason, with James surely a key part of the conversations moving forward.
