The NBA’s all-time winningest coach will no longer be behind the bench. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Gregg Popovich will transition from the head coach of the Spurs to team president.
Popovich has served as San Antonio’s head coach since 1996. Along the way, Popovich has won five championships, 1,422 regular season games and has been elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame. However, Popovich is now 76-years-old. In November, Popovich suffered a stroke, which caused him to be away from the team for almost the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign. Mitch Johnson took over as interim head coach and the Spurs finished with a 34-48 record — though much of that blame can be placed upon a Victor Wembanyama season-ending ailment.
With Wembanyama, reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and another lottery pick on the way, this San Antonio job will be one of the most highly coveted in years, though NBA insider Marc Stein is reporting that Johnson is expected to be named as the full-time replacement. The Spurs have a 6.0% chance at the No. 1 pick in the upcoming Draft Lottery on May 12.
