Cincinnati Reds vs. Washington Nationals prediction, pick for Friday 5/2/25

The Reds are in prime position to bury the Nationals tonight. With Hunter Greene’s electric stuff and a lineup ready to pounce on Mitchell Parker, the Nats might need to call in the cavalry this game. As of right now, they just don’t have the horses to compete. Derby puns! Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Friday night baseball game between the Reds and the Nationals.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Reds vs. Nationals prediction, preview

The Reds are poised to unleash on a Nationals team that simply doesn’t have the firepower to keep pace. Hunter Greene, the Reds’ young flamethrower, has been gosh-darn electric this season, posting a 2.70 ERA and an astounding 0.85 WHIP. The man is an absolute machine. Tonight, he’ll face a Nationals lineup that’s been stuck in a holding pattern. While Mitchell Parker’s 2.65 ERA is respectable, his lack of strikeouts (just a 13% strikeout rate) and struggles against potent offenses like Cincinnati’s make him a prime target. The Nationals’ offense, ranking a tepid 18th in MLB for batting average (.238), just doesn’t strike enough fear into pitchers. With Greene’s elite velocity and command, this should be a mismatch from the start.

Elly De La Cruz continues to turn heads and justify cover photo shoots, having smashed five home runs with 24 RBIs and swiping 11 bags. He’s the spark the Reds need, and with players like him surrounding Parker’s unremarkable stuff, it’s clear where the advantage lies. In addition, TJ Friedl’s consistent on-base ability and Gavin Lux’s impressive .416 OBP will set the table for a lineup that ranks fifth in MLB in runs scored (5.1). The Reds’ offense is built for these kinds of matchups. With the Nationals’ inability to produce runs in clutch moments, it’s difficult to envision them keeping up.

The Nationals’ key hitters, like James Wood and Luis Garcia, are capable but far too streaky to pose a real threat tonight. Wood, despite hitting .250 with nine home runs, has been inconsistent in his contact and doesn’t provide enough protection for the rest of the lineup. Garcia, sitting with a .253 average, doesn’t have the power to carry the load, and Keibert Ruiz, while solid with a .299 average, doesn’t offer enough upside to exploit Greene’s overpowering stuff. The Nationals rank 14th in MLB for runs scored, but without the depth to string together hits or sustain pressure, they’ll struggle to get anything going against the Reds’ ace.

Nationals vs. Reds pick, best bet

Looking at the betting trends, Cincinnati’s dominance at home shines through. They’ve covered the run line in each of their last five games after a day off, and with a 64.7% implied win probability on the moneyline, they’re simply the better team here. The Nationals are almost always outclassed in these types of matchups this year. They’ve posted a meager 7-13 record against teams with winning records in their last 20, while Cincinnati has covered the run line in five consecutive games against NL teams after a day off.

The Nationals’ lineup has not been able to handle pitchers with Greene’s pedigree, and their .238 team batting average against right-handers, combined with their 22nd-ranked on-base percentage, just won’t be enough tonight. This is a game the Reds should dominate, from Greene’s first pitch to the final out.

Best bet: Reds -1.5 (+110) vs. Nationals
