Scottie Scheffler (-10) leads the CJ Cup Byron Nelson after first round

After shooting an opening round of 61, Scottie Scheffler (-10) leads the CJ Cup Byron Nelson by two shots. He is trailed by Rico Hoey (-8) and Jhonattan Vegas (-8).

It was an impressive score, but surprisingly only the second-best round he has shot on the PGA TOUR.

Playing in his home state of Texas, Scheffler looked at home out there from start to finish. The front nine was dominant, recording four birdies in a row from holes three to six. He went on to birdie at 8, before an eagle on the par 5 ninth.

The back nine was slightly more reserved, with birdies on 13, 17 and 18 accompanied by six pars.

His last win was the final event of 2024, the Hero World Challenge. That was in December of 2024, so it’s been a longer wait than usual for him to get back to winning ways. There will be plenty more opportunities for the rest of the season to pick up wins, but getting one before the start of the second major in 2025 should springboard the rest of his year.

This is not your typical PGA TOUR field, so it’s no surprise that Scheffler is now a huge favorite against a weaker field with a two-shot lead. On DraftKings Sportsbook, he is listed as a commanding -190 favorite to win after the first round.
