Here are my top Pick6 plays for the 5/1 MLB slate.
Rafael Devers More Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
Rafael Devers has started to find his groove over the past five games. He is on a five-game hitting streak, and three of those games have been multi-hit games. Devers has also scored seven runs over those five games and registered an RBI in each of them. So, over that five-game stretch, Devers is averaging four hits + runs + RBIs per game. To clear this prop number, he needs just half of that amount against Jose Berrios. Berrios and Devers have faced off many times, and while Devers doesn’t have a great average, he can generate power when he does get the better of Berrios. He has two career home runs off of Berrios, which would automatically win this bet if he goes yard in this game. He also just needs one solid hit that drives in a run or gets him in position to score a run of his own.
Jarren Duran More Than 1.5 Total Bases
Jarren Duran is another member of the Red Sox who is completely on fire at the moment. Duran has ten hits, six RBIs, and four runs scored in his past four games. Over the past two weeks, Duran has an OPS of .935, and that number has gotten over 1.000 if you only count the past week. He has a tOPS+ of 117 against right-handed pitching this season, making this a great matchup against Jose Berrios. Duran has also crushed Berrios throughout his career. Duran is 9/18 in his career against Berrios, with three home runs and five doubles in those nine hits. So, in eight out of 18 at-bats against Berrios in his career, he has recorded more than 1.5 total bases. That tells us that he should clear this number with one swing, but luckily, just in case, he has the whole game to rack up multiple hits or an extra-base hit.
Alejandro Kirk Less Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
While Jarren Duran should feel very confident in his pitching matchup tonight, Alejandro Kirk likely feels the opposite. Tanner Houck has dominated Kirk throughout his career. Kirk has 14 career plate appearances against Houck and has never gotten on base. Not a hit, not a walk, just an OBP of .000. Houck should dominate Kirk again, keeping him from getting on base. That would require Kirk to get more than 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs against the Red Sox bullpen, which seems unlikely. Kirk has struggled at the plate this season, with just a .239 BA and only five extra-base hits through 93 plate appearances. The Red Sox should shut Kirk down and keep him under this number tonight.
Bryan Reynolds More Than 0.5 Singles
After a four-game hitless streak, Bryan Reynolds finally found his groove yesterday against the Cubs. He recorded two hits, including a double, and scored a run in the Pirates’ win. Reynolds has been a very consistent player over the past few seasons and should get back into his rhythm this season. Last night could be the spark that has Reynolds feeling confident, and now he gets a pitching matchup that should also inspire confidence. The Cubs are trotting out Colin Rea to start today’s game. Reynolds is 7/12 in his career against Rea with a home run mixed in. Good enough for a .583 batting average and 1.000 SLG. Reynolds hasn’t found much power so far this season, but should be able to pick up a base hit against a pitcher that he has hit so well off of in his career. That will get Reynolds over this number for the second straight game in this series.
Juan Soto Less Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
Juan Soto has had a disastrous start to his Mets career. He is in a massive slump to start the season, and based on his body language, he is starting to feel the effects of it. He is slashing just .241/.368/.384 through 136 plate appearances to start the season. Soto has also not driven in a run in any of his past nine games. He is 0/7 with no runs scored or RBIs recorded through the first two games of this series against Arizona. To make matters worse, Soto has always struggled against Zac Gallen in his career. In 24 career plate appearances against Gallen, Soto has just two walks and four hits. That is just a .250 career OBP against Gallen. That would indicate that today is not the day that Soto gets his season on track, so he should stay under this number for the third straight games in this series.
Matthew Liberatore Less Than 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed
Matthew Liberatore has been a reliever most of his career, but started this season in the Cardinals’ rotation. Outside of one shaky start, it has been a strong start to the season for Liberatore. He has gone at least six innings in each of his five starts, allowing more than three runs just once. In his past three starts, he has given up just a combined three runs against the Mets, Phillies and Brewers, all dangerous lineups. Liberatore has done a great job of limiting the long ball, giving up just one home run through his first five starts. So far this season, he has a WHIP under 1.00 and is averaging 8.1 strikeouts per nine innings. If he can keep those numbers up, he will be a really solid starter for St. Louis. Liberatore has also been great against the Reds, with an opponent batting average of .080 in seven career games. He should be confident in this matchup and keep his opponent under 2.5 runs for the fourth straight start.
