Rasmussen’s dominance on the mound, coupled with Kansas City’s offense being in a serious funk, spells a tough night for the Royals. We know the real story isn’t this game’s outcome, anyways. Can Bobby Witt Jr. extend his hitting streak to 21 games? Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Rays and the Royals.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Rays vs. Royals prediction, preview
Tonight’s contest between the Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays sets the stage for a fascinating matchup, and the value lies firmly on Tampa Bay. The Rays, despite a few stumbles recently, have been electric, and Drew Rasmussen has been a huge part of that. With a 2.10 ERA and 0.896 WHIP, Rasmussen has been dominant this season. His numbers don’t just tell the story—they define a pitcher who knows how to command the game, even when the bats aren’t firing. In five starts, he’s given up just two earned runs over 10.2 innings in his last two outings against top-tier lineups, proving he’s capable of shutting down an offense like Kansas City’s, which has been languishing near the bottom of the league in batting and OPS.
Speaking of which, the Royals’ offense is a glaring weakness. Kansas City ranks 29th in team OPS and 29th in batting average, and they’ve been struggling to generate offense against both left and right-handed pitching. Their failure to capitalize with runners in scoring position further compounds their woes. On top of that, with Noah Cameron making his MLB debut, the Royals are in a precarious position—no matter how promising his minor league numbers look. The Rays’ ability to strike early and often is a major asset here. Rasmussen will get plenty of run support from an offense that, while not a juggernaut, has the tools to pile up runs against an inconsistent Royals pitching staff.
For Tampa’s bats, Yandy Diaz continues to provide stability with his on-base skills, while Junior Caminero and Jonathan Aranda offer the power potential to exploit Kansas City’s pitching. Caminero’s six home runs lead the team, and he’s on a solid run. Meanwhile, Aranda’s .294 average adds much-needed consistency. With several players showing the ability to drive in runs and get on base—Yandy Diaz’s .395 slugging and Kameron Misner’s .554 OBP stand out—the Rays have the offensive depth to break through even against a solid bullpen like Kansas City’s.
Royals vs. Rays pick, best bet
Kansas City has shown flashes, but their struggles in high-leverage situations and against quality starting pitching leave them vulnerable. They’ve been too reliant on sporadic performances, and against a steady hand like Rasmussen, that’s not going to cut it. The Rays’ bullpen has been rock-solid, and their overall pitching staff, ranked eighth in ERA, will likely keep the Royals at bay all night.
When you look at the trends, everything points toward a Rays win. Tampa Bay is 8-1 in their last nine games against Kansas City following a loss, and they’ve covered the run line in seven of their last eight after playing the previous day. On the other hand, the Royals have failed to cover the run line in six of their last seven games as underdogs against Tampa Bay following a win.
Oh—yes. I think Witt Jr. gets to 21, too.
Best bet: Rays -1.5 (+130) vs. Royals
