Since Turki Al-Sheikh has entered the boxing world, he has put on some of the most significant events the sport has seen. But a few months ago, he delivered another game-changing announcement. Al-Sheikh bought The Ring Magazine and reinvented the company, changing its future. The Ring Magazine will now host boxing events all around the world, and its first event in the United States will take place in the heart of Times Square, New York City, on May 2.
As most cards put together by Al-Sheikh typically are, this event is stacked with top-tier talent as well. Three of boxing’s top stars, Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Teofimo Lopez, will all compete on the same card, but not against each other.
One year ago, in April 2024, Garcia defeated Haney via unanimous decision, but it was later ruled a no contest as Garcia tested positive for a banned substance. That contest took place in Brooklyn, New York, and now Garcia returns to the Empire State to prove to the world that a new and improved version of himself is here.
Garcia and Haney haven’t fought since, but Garcia has displayed a calmer version of himself. Leading up to his fight against Haney, Garcia appeared like he was going through a lot in his personal life and showed reckless behavior. A rematch between Garcia and Haney seems likely in 2025, but each fighter needs to pick up a victory on Friday to see their rematch come to fruition.
Now Garcia is back after one year away from the sport and will fight Rolando “Rolly” Romero in a 12-round welterweight bout. Garcia is a massive -900 favorite as Romero is +550 on DraftKings Sportsbook. Romero is an elite fighter, and although he has two losses in his career, he has had a difficult schedule. In his last bout, Romero beat Manuel Jaimes by unanimous decision in September 2024. Romero is 16-2 with 13 knockouts, and only three of his bouts have gone the distance in his career. Garica is also a big puncher, having 20 knockouts. With two of the best knockout artists in the sport, a finish is likely in this contest.
It is unusual to see the former Undisputed Lightweight Champion Devin Haney in the co-main event, but that is the case for this unique Friday card. Haney will face Jose Ramirez in his second welterweight fight. Technically, Haney doesn’t have a loss on his resume, but on fight night, his hand didn’t get raised against Garcia. His record remains perfect at 31-0 with 15 knockouts. Haney is also a big favorite at -1200, with Ramirez at +700. Ramirez is 29-2 and is returning after losing to Arnold Barboza Jr in his previous fight.
The third fight from the top is the only title bout on this card. WBO Super Lightweight Champion Teofimo Lopez is taking on undefeated contender Arnold Barboza Jr. Lopez is 21-1 with 13 knockouts in his career and has won five straight fights after suffering his first loss of his career to George Kambosos Jr in 2021. In this contest, Lopez is the betting favorite at -225 as Barboza is +180 on DraftKings Sportsbook. Barboza has a quick turnaround, since his last win was against Jack Cattarall in February 2025.
The Main Card begins on DAZN PPV at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 2, with the main event ring walks scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. ET.
