Remember when the New York Yankees kicked off their 2025 campaign by smashing back-to-back-to-back home runs against the Milwaukee Brewers on Opening Day? That flurry of offensive fireworks jump-started the torpedo bat discourse and took the league by storm.
Well, the Bronx Bombers have done it again! At the top of the first inning of Tuesday’s outing against the Baltimore Orioles, Trent Grisham launched a leadoff homer to begin the festivities. Aaron Judge then followed it up with his ninth dinger of the season before Ben Rice launched one of his own — nearly to the exact same place above the right field wall of Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

It’s safe to say Baltimore starter Kyle Gibson’s ERA won’t be the same after the high-power display. His dreadful start continued as he remained in the game for 3.2 innings, allowing nine runs on 11 hits, including five total home runs. By the time his outing ended early, Gibson’s ERA for the day sat at a sky-high 22.09.
New York’s offensive explosion marks the first time a team has ever hit three consecutive home runs to begin a game multiple times in the same season. With over 230 thousand contests played in MLB history, it’s a bit wild that no franchise has ever accomplished the feat before.
While some people will attribute the long-ball boom to the Yankees’ torpedo bats, it’s more of a testament to their power-hitting upside and Aaron Judge’s greatness than anything else — perhaps the real torpedo bats are the friends we made along the way.
