I have a feeling that the Celtics are due for a real blowout to close this series, so I’ll adjust the spread up to 13.5 points for Game 5 at TD Garden. A glacial pace of play (89.8) has been a factor in these matchups being a little more low-scoring than initially expected, but Boston also’s yet to have a really great shooting performance from beyond the arc. If that happens — watch out.
The Celtics owned the NBA’s second-best offensive rating throughout the regular season (119.5). Efficiency and volume from the three-point line was a huge aspect of that success. In fact, Boston attempted 48.2 threes per game, which was almost six more than any other team. It also made those threes at a 36.8% clip — the ninth-best figure in the league. Yet, in the first-round, the Celtics are shooting only 33.0 three-pointers per contest and are making just 34.8% of them. Honestly, outside of Derrick White nailing seven triples in Game 1, no one’s really had all that special a showing. Despite that, Boston’s victories have still come by an average of 11.6 points.
The term “due” is overused in sports betting analysis, but White has certainly shown the ability to get hot from distance. It’s not like he won’t have the opportunity, either. White comes into Game 5 averaging 9.0 three-point attempts per contest in this series — the ninth-highest total of any player in the postseason. If White or Jayson Tatum or Payton Pritchard start actually hitting some shots, Orlando simply does not have the firepower to keep up with Boston. The Celtics are due for a game where they hit 18 threes. That’s will easily put the squad over 105 points and hopefully White’s at the center of it all. Hitting four triples in a single game is something that White accomplished 34 times during the regular season, so it’s not all that far-fetched.
