It looked like the Boston Celtics might run away with this series after a Game 1 victory at home. After a shaky first half, they put the screws down on Orlando to win 103-86. However, there was concern about Jayson Tatum’s wrist. Those concerns materialized as the All-Star was ruled out for Wednesday’s game.
While Game 2 was closer than Game 1, Boston assuaged Tatum-related fears with a 109-100 victory. The defending champions will head to Orlando in control of the series. Let’s look at some of the top performers in the game.
Big Time Performer: Boston Celtics G Jaylen Brown
All eyes were on Jaylen Brown in this one. With Jayson Tatum out, someone needed to step in and be the primary option against a strong Orlando defense. The reigning Finals MVP more than stepped up with a stat-stuffing 36/10/5 performance on 12/19 shooting. With Boston well in control of the series, it’s possible Tatum will take a breather in Game 3. Expect another massive night of production for Brown if so.
Big Time Performer: Orlando Magic F Paolo Banchero
The Orlando Magic sensed opportunity tonight and Paolo Banchero nearly capitalized on it. The 22-year-old former All-Star racked up an impressive 32/9/7 stat line in the loss. His scoring and playmaking kept them competitive all night, and at one point in the second half, he took control of the game. Alas, it was not enough. Orlando will need a massive performance from Banchero on Friday to avoid a 3-0 deficit.
Stepping Up: Boston Celtics F/C Kristaps Porzingis
Man, talk about toughness. Late in the third quarter, Porzingis took an accidental elbow to the head, opening a massive cut. After a brief trip to the locker room and a large bandage, KP returned to the game like nothing ever happened. The large Latvian recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds, in addition to a pair of steals and blocks. Most notably, he drew 14 free throws with his physical play. His scoring was crucial in the absence of Tatum, and he will be counted on in the scoring column Friday if Tatum remains out.
Stepping Up: Orlando Magic F Franz Wagner
Paolo Banchero was in desperate need of a Robin to his Batman tonight, and Franz Wagner delivered. The young forward stepped up his efficiency with 25 points on 10-for-20 shooting after 23 points on 10-for-24 in Game 1. Franz managed to chip in four rebounds and four assists in addition to a pair of steals. I’ve got my eye on his points over/under for Game 3.
