After just missing out on a postseason berth, the Falcons had a very quiet offseason. The biggest changes for this organization are likely to occur in the NFL Draft, starting with the 15th overall pick in the first round. What position and players should football fans expect Atlanta to target?
Ahead of Thursday night, let’s break down the Falcons’ NFL Draft odds on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Atlanta Falcons first round pick prediction
Despite disappointing down the stretch, the 2024-25 campaign wasn’t all bad for Atlanta. Quarterback Michael Penix showed flashes of greatness as a rookie. The offense has a strong young core, led by running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Drake London. Last season, the Falcons ranked sixth in yards per game (369.8).
So, what does the front office need to improve this roster? Defense, defense, and even more defense. Outside of cornerback A.J. Terrell, the Falcons don’t have anyone that strikes fear into opposing offenses. The biggest problem on that side of the ball has been generating pressure. Atlanta hasn’t had a player record seven or more sacks since 2019.
Fortunately for the Dirty Birds, this draft class is stocked with quality edge rushers. Elite prospects such as Abdul Carter and Jalon Walker will likely be taken early. However, there’s still an abundance of names that could make an impact for the Falcons. The Saints are also in the market for a defensive lineman, raising the stakes for both NFC South rivals.
The second tier of sack specialists isn’t too shabby. Names such as Shemar Stewart, Mykel Williams, and Mike Green could easily be selected at #15. However, what if the Falcons decided to zig while everyone else zags? Given the depth at edge, the team could wait until the second round (pick #46) to find a starter.
Whatever Atlanta decides to do, it needs to find a defensive game-wrecker. Nobody the Falcons can reasonably draft fits the bill better than Jihaad Campbell. The former Alabama star emerged as one of the nation’s best linebackers last season. His do-it-all play style could also lend itself to pass-rushing opportunities.
There is risk in projecting a linebacker to Atlanta; Campbell is the only one that justifies being taken early. Still, there’s something to be said about grabbing the best player available at a much thinner position. Most mock drafts have teams prioritizing edge rushers, offensive linemen, or tight ends in the mid-first round. If that occurs, don’t be shocked if the Falcons go for high upside instead of positional need.
BEST BET: Falcons to draft linebacker (+450)
