The Padres are on fire, riding a six-out-of-seven win streak and boasting a lethal offense led by Tatis and Machado, while their pitching staff remains among the league’s best. The Astros, though struggling at 8-10, need to turn their season around quickly, and with Gusto on the mound, they’ll hope to capitalize on a Padres squad with some bullpen vulnerabilities. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for tonight’s Friday baseball game between the Astros and the Padres.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Astros vs. Padres prediction, preview
The Padres continue to roll, now sitting at a blistering 15-4, with six wins in their last seven games. Their offense, led by Fernando Tatis Jr., is clicking, but their pitching remains a bit of a question mark—enter Kyle Hart. Hart’s been solid in his last two outings, but with a 5.40 ERA, he’s certainly no lock, and a lineup like Houston’s can exploit that inconsistency. The Astros are hungry after dropping two of three to the Cardinals, and with Ryan Gusto on the mound—coming off a strong start despite a few rough outings—there’s potential for Houston to capitalize.
Looking at the pitching, Gusto’s earned a 3.00 ERA over his last few appearances and has been solid, with a K/BB ratio of 5.00. Meanwhile, Hart’s pitching metrics show a troubling vulnerability—his 13.0 hits per nine innings and 2.11 WHIP suggest a pitcher who’s living dangerously. That’s a perfect storm for the Astros’ hitters, who need to wake up from their recent slump. Jose Altuve and Jeremy Peña have combined for six home runs, while Yordan Alvarez remains the big power threat with 10 RBIs, making this a matchup Houston can exploit. And while the Astros’ offense has been lackluster, facing a pitcher like Hart should provide just the spark they need.
Padres vs. Astros pick, best bet
For the Padres, Tatis is on fire, leading the league with six home runs and 14 RBIs. Manny Machado’s been steady, batting .324 with a solid on-base percentage, and Xander Bogaerts continues to be a reliable bat. San Diego has a .274 team batting average, ranking 1st in the league, and has an impressive .348 team OBP, putting constant pressure on pitchers. Still, with Gusto limiting damage and the Padres facing a more potent bullpen in Houston, the edge may lean toward the Astros here—especially with the betting trend in their favor. The Astros are 14-1 in their last 15 home games following a road loss, while the Padres have lost five of their last six night games in Houston after a win.
The Padres have been great as underdogs, but the Astros’ need for a rebound, combined with their pitching advantage, is too much to ignore. San Diego’s pitching staff ranks second in ERA, but their bullpen ranks just 15th in K/9 (8.8), which gives Houston a clear advantage late in the game. The Astros are 6-4 against the spread in their last 10 games, and their bullpen’s ability to shut things down should be the deciding factor in a tight matchup.
Take the Astros to win this one, likely by a narrow margin.
Best bet: Astros (-150) vs. Padres
