SP Brandon Pfaadt, Arizona Diamondbacks at Miami Marlins, $8,700
Pfaadt is directly on the heels of his best outing of the season, tossing six scoreless innings against the Orioles. It was a very positive performance from the young RHP after Pfaadt surrendered three home runs to the Nationals in his prior start. In general, Pfaadt’s stats in 2025 are underwhelming. The 26-year-old sports an inflated 5.87 xERA and just a 17.4% strikeout rate. Still, these are small samples and I’d expect some normalization soon. Especially in regard to Pfaadt’s lack of strikeouts, as the right-hander’s 11.4% swinging strike rate is identical to the figure he posted in 2024 — when he averaged 9.17 punchouts per nine.
The Marlins should also assist in the regression to the mean. Miami’s likely overachieved from an run production standpoint so far this season, but that still only translates to a 97 wRC+ and a .121 ISO that ranks 24th in baseball. The Marlins own MLB’s ninth-highest strikeout rate, as well (24.1%).
OF Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers, $5,900
Trout’s batting below the Mendoza line at the moment, but believe me when I say that that is not an accurate representation of how the former All-Star is swinging the bat at the moment. Across 71 plate appearances, Trout’s in possession of a hilariously small .128 BABIP — the fourth-lowest mark of any qualified hitter. Still, despite that unluckiness, Trout’s also smashed six home runs and owns a 96th percentile expected slugging rate (.632). The hits are coming. I swear.
Tonight, Trout and the Angels will get to square-off with Patrick Corbin ($6,200), the man with MLB’s highest ERA from 2021 to 2024. Things did not go particularly well for Corbin in his first outing with the Rangers, as the left-hander allowed three earned runs across four innings without registering a single strikeout. Simply put, this is not a person who should still be starting games at the major league level. Look for Trout to have a big day.
OF Alex Call, Washington Nationals at Pittsburgh Pirates, $4,100
Call’s salary is up over $4,000 for the first time in 2025, yet the outfielder remains a very viable value option on tonight’s slate. It might be too early to say that the 30-year-old is in the midst of a breakout campaign, but Call’s slashing .324/.457/.441 with a microscopic 4.3% strikeout rate across 46 plate appearances. It’s the perfect archetype for a leadoff hitter, so with CJ Abrams (hip) on the IL, that’s exactly where the Nationals decided to slot Call. He’ll likely be there once again on Wednesday in a matchup with the left-handed Bailey Falter ($6,700).
With young and exciting pitching talent in the Pirates’ system, it feels like Falter might not be in this rotation for too much longer. However, the southpaw will start his fourth game of the season this evening. The first three have not gone well, to say the least. Falter possesses a 7.20 ERA and a 5.29 FIP across 15.0 innings. He’s also surrendered 10 earned runs in his last nine innings of work. Yikes.
