The Reds might have the home-field edge, but the Mariners aren’t backing down. Despite their struggles to score—averaging just 3.81 runs per game (23rd in MLB)—Seattle’s pitching staff, led by Bryce Miller, gives them the upper hand. Miller’s 4.50 ERA doesn’t tell the full story; he’s been solid enough to keep Seattle in the game even when the offense stalls. Tonight’s matchup against Cincinnati’s lineup, which has been far from dominant, should be a good opportunity for Miller to shut things down and give his team a chance to pull away. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Reds and the Mariners.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games each round, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Reds vs. Mariners prediction, preview
The Mariners have been waiting for this moment: their first road win of 2025. They’ve been shaky away from home, but tonight they’ve got the perfect opportunity against a Reds squad that’s struggling at the plate and struggling to find consistency. Bryce Miller (0-2, 4.50 ERA) takes the mound for Seattle, and while the record isn’t pretty, the stats point to a breakout performance tonight. Miller has been impressive in limiting hard contact, with a solid 7.3 K/9. What’s even more impressive is his .250 opposing batting average—he’s keeping hitters at bay, even if he’s still working through some early-season kinks.
The Reds are a team that—breaking news—relies on power, but they’ve been struggling to get consistent contact. As of now, Cincinnati is batting just .204 as a team, ranking 28th in the majors in batting average. They’re also 22nd in runs scored, averaging just 3.88 runs per game. Elly De La Cruz has provided a spark, but the rest of the lineup has been more miss than hit. That makes Miller a good bet to handle this offense without too much trouble.
On the other side, Nick Martinez (0-2, 6.06 ERA) will take the ball for the Reds, and he’s been far too hittable so far this season. Martinez has given up four or more earned runs in two of his three starts, and his 1.22 WHIP suggests he’s been letting too many batters reach base. The Mariners, despite their own offensive struggles, have enough firepower to take advantage of Martinez’s weaknesses. Dylan Moore (.306 AVG, four HRs) and Cal Raleigh (five HRs) are both showing that they can deliver the big hit, and this lineup can put together enough of a rally to support Miller’s effort.
Mariners vs. Reds pick, best bet
Now, onto the total. We’re confidently leaning on the u9 runs. Both of these teams have been inconsistent offensively, and that makes it difficult to expect a high-scoring affair. The Mariners are only averaging 3.81 runs per game, ranking 22nd in MLB, and their team .208 batting average (26th) isn’t going to strike fear into anyone. Meanwhile, the Reds’ offense has been in even worse shape—third in team ERA (2.87) and first in WHIP (0.92), but they’ve struggled to string together consistent hits. The Reds’ offense is averaging just 4.1 runs per game (16th in MLB), and their .327 slugging percentage (26th in MLB) speaks volumes about their lack of power. With two pitchers capable of limiting scoring opportunities—Miller with his solid strikeout numbers and Martinez prone to allowing contact but pitching with decent command—it’s tough to see this game turning into a slugfest.
With the Mariners’ pitching advantage and both teams’ offensive inconsistencies, we’re backing Seattle to get the road win here. The under is looking like the safer play as well, with both teams likely to struggle to reach a high total.
