SP Jeffrey Springs, Athletics at Chicago White Sox, $8,200
There’s some very talented pitchers at the top-end of Tuesday’s slate, but I’ll warn you against overlooking Springs. The left-hander has fought some control issues to begin 2025 — and pitching twice at Sutter Health Park hasn’t been ideal — yet the elite strikeout potential that we saw in brief snippets during 2023 and 2024 remains. Springs has struck out 16 opponents in his 15.0 innings of work with the Athletics, a trend that is very much validated by a 13.1% swinging strike rate and an 85th percentile chase rate (34.9%). In his lone start this season away from Sacramento, Springs threw six scoreless innings versus the Mariners and racked up 33.1 FPTS. Needless to say, there’s some upside with this pick.
Springs will also get the benefit of facing off with the lowly White Sox. Coming into this evening’s slate, Chicago ranks dead-last in MLB in ISO (.099) and wOBA (.260). The White Sox also possess the league’s sixth-highest strikeout rate (24.8%), which essentially makes them the best possible matchup.
OF Tyler O’Neill, Baltimore Orioles vs. Cleveland Guardians, $4,700
O’Neill was brought in this offseason to replace the departed Anthony Santander and, through three weeks, he’s done a pretty good job. In 52 plate appearances, the veteran outfielder is slashing .289/.365/.533 with a .397 expected wOBA and a 160 wRC+. O’Neill only has two long balls in 2025 — with both coming against Jose Berrios in two different games — but it would be fair to say the Orioles have gotten their money’s worth so far. I expect that return on value to increase on Tuesday in a matchup with Logan Allen ($6,300).
Allen was among the worst starters in baseball in 2024, pitching to a 5.90 xERA and surrendering an eye-popping 2.03 opponent home runs per nine. As you might expect, things only got worse for Allen when you isolated his numbers specifically against RHBs. In fact, righties combined to hit .306 with a .403 wOBA off the southpaw. Speaking of stats from last season, O’Neill managed a .313 average with a .438 ISO and a 215 wRC+ off lefties. That seems relevant, too.
OF Kerry Carpenter, Detroit Tigers at Milwaukee Brewers, $3,700
The Carpenter disrespect is ridiculous. While the 27-year-old could certainly be described as a platoon bat, that would be selling the man short. Carpenter is an elite platoon bat. A platoon bat that I would honestly consider spending upwards of $5,000 on given the right matchup with an RHP — a matchup like he draws on Tuesday.
Carpenter and the Tigers will face-off with Quinn Priester ($6,600), a man who doesn’t just possess a 6.02 ERA at the MLB level, but one who has also surrendered a .416 wOBA to the LHBs he’s seen while in the big leagues. In his career, Carpenter is slashing .290/.347/.552 with a .262 ISO and a 149 wRC+ off of right-handed pitching. In 2025, Carpenter owns a 173 wRC+ within the split in his 40 plate appearances. Does this seem like an asset that should be priced this far below the $4,000 plateau? Take advantage.
