Cubs SP Justin Steele (elbow) out for the season

After reports that Steele was seeking more opinions on his elbow injury, Cubs manager Craig Counsell told the media Sunday that Steele unfortunately needs season-ending surgery to repair his elbow. This past Wednesday, the pitcher was placed on the 15-day IL with left elbow tendinitis.

Steele has been excellent so far this season, with a 3-1 record, 4.76 ERA and 21 strikeouts in his 22 2/3 innings pitched. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time the 28-year-old has dealt with a major elbow injury, as he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017. ESPN’s Jeff Passan is reporting that it is currently unclear if the surgery that is ending Steele’s season this time around is full Tommy John or a primary repair.

The Cubs lead the NL Central at 10-7 this season, but losing Steele is a massive blow to their rotation. On DraftKings Sportsbook, Chicago carries +2500 odds to win the 2025 World Series.
