Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams started the season strong, but after battling some minor injuries over the last week, he now heads to a 10-day stint on the injured list.
Per the team, the 24-year old is dealing with a right hip flexor strain.
Abrams missed multiple games last week with thigh tightness before retaking his spot in the starting lineup for Friday’s game. According to manager Dave Martinez, Adams felt discomfort in his hip after attempting to steal second base in the top of the third inning, then felt it again after fielding a ground ball later in the inning. He was subsequently pulled from the game in the fourth frame.
The shortstop’s absence is a tough blow for the Nationals, who hold a 6-7 record through their first 13 contests. Abrams is slashing .244/.289/.585 so far this season and leads the team with four home runs and four stolen bases in 11 games.
As for who steps in as Abrams’ temporary replacement, DKN contributor Stan Son provided insight when the shortstop left Friday’s contest.
“Amed Rosario and Paul DeJong are the likely replacements for Abrams. Rosario has a career ISO of .126, but he has stolen at least 10 bases in each of the last four seasons. DeJong offers little speed, but has a career .189 ISO. The strikeout rate is high, though, and he hasn’t hit over .230 since 2020. Alex Call and James Wood will likely bat leadoff while Abrams is out.”
