The Knicks are coming off of a heartbreaking loss to the Celtics on Tuesday night. After going 0-3 against the Celtics heading into that game, the Knicks looked like they were finally ready to get over the hump. However, a late foul on a three by Karl-Anthony Towns helped send the game to overtime, where the Celtics came out on top. The Knicks need to win just one game to secure the 3-seed in the Eastern Conference over the Pacers, who are hot on their tail. However, after facing the Celtics on Tuesday night, they now face the Pistons tonight and the Cavaliers tomorrow night. That is three of the top six teams in the Eastern Conference, giving the Knicks tough final tests. They will face the Nets in the final game of the season, where they could pick up that victory if they really need it to secure their seeding.
To make matters worse, the Knicks will be short-handed for this game against the Pistons and potentially tomorrow night as well. The Knicks finally got back to full strength when Jalen Brunson returned on Sunday after a month off the court. Now, they will face the Pistons without OG Anunoby, Josh Hart or Mitchell Robinson. Robinson’s injury is more of a load management issue as he still works his way back from an injury that kept him out most of the season. Hart and Anunoby both had lingering injury issues, and after playing a grueling overtime game on Tuesday night, Tom Thibodeau is letting them recover. The path to a championship for the 3-seed in the Eastern Conference compared to the 4-seed won’t be much of a difference. Hart is by far the team’s second-best rebounder after Towns, and since returning, Robinson has become the Knicks’ third-leading rebounder. So, there is a big void that Towns should fill. He had 14 rebounds on Tuesday night against the Celtics and should hit that number or higher in this game, pushing him over his rebounds prop number.
