Randy Vasquez less than 5.5 hits against
We’ll kick things off in Sacramento, where the Padres are looking to rebound following a 10-4 loss last night. San Diego ace Dylan Cease surrendered nine runs to a surprisingly competent Athletics lineup. In terms of stuff, Wednesday’s starter, Randy Vasquez, is a major downgrade. That doesn’t mean the right-hander is incapable of subduing this lineup. Through two starts, he’s allowed just two total runs over 10.2 innings.
As good as this A’s offense has looked, they only recorded the 25th-most hits in baseball last season. Vasquez has given up just six total knocks so far. It helps that manager Bob Melvin keeps the 26-year-old on a short leash. If things begin to look rough, the Padres won’t hesitate to turn to their bullpen with an off-day tomorrow. Keeping that in mind, San Diego’s slept-on starter is someone to back this afternoon.
Jake Irvin less than 4.5 strikeouts thrown
If the rebuilding Nationals have one glaring weakness, its pitching depth. Washington’s rotation is lacking high-level arms, as outside of Mackenzie Gore, nobody on this roster has SP1 potential. Still, the team does have plenty of decent, albeit not great, starters to fill out the rotation. That includes fourth-year pro Jake Irvin; so far, the 28-year-old has recorded a 5.40 ERA over 10.0 innings.
Those numbers don’t bode well going into a date with the juggernaut Dodgers. Freddie Freeman (ankle) may be out of action, but the defending champions remain lethal at the plate. Irvin reaching five strikeouts vs. Los Angeles is difficult to imagine. Will the righty whiff that many batters in a short amount of time? Or will he stay in the game long enough to accumulate plenty of K’s? Against a lineup this good, neither scenario feels likely.
Hunter Brown more than 7.5 strikeouts
Hunter Brown will get the ball for Wednesday’s AL West rubber match between the Astros and Mariners. The young hurler has continued to dominate this season following a terrific second half in 2024. Through two starts, he’s allowed four earned runs while striking out 15 batters over 12.0 innings of work.
Houston’s budding ace is poised for another dominant outing tonight. Seattle’s offense is one of baseball’s worst, scoring the second-fewest runs per game this season. Over his last three starts vs. the Mariners, Brown has accounted for 22 strikeouts through 18.0 innings. At a slightly boosted value, this is a pitcher play worth considering for today’s late afternoon slate.
Rafael Devers more than 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs
Rafael Devers’ start to the season was nothing short of anemic. The third baseman, now a designated hitter, struck out 15 times in his first 20 at-bats. However, the former All-Star has turned things around recently. Over his last five games, Devers has hit .444 while driving in a home run and seven RBIs.
Boston will face an old foe in Kevin Gausman on Wednesday. The Toronto hurler has struggled against several Red Sox throughout his career, recording a 5.24 ERA at Fenway Park. Devers loves this matchup, having notched nine hits in 30 at-bats vs. the righty. Another big day for the suddenly surging slugger could be in store tonight.
Austin Riley more than 0.5 RBI
Speaking of talented third basemen, Austin Riley has been one of many struggling Braves hitters this season. Through ten games, the 28-year-old has hit just .175, including one homer and four RBIs in 43 at-bats. Atlanta fans are hoping that Tuesday’s two-hit day vs. the Phillies is a sign of things to come. Still, following a disappointing 2024 campaign, it’s difficult to trust the two-time All-Star.
Fortunately for the entire Braves offense, Taijuan Walker will take the mound for Philadelphia. The 32-year-old dominated the Rockies last week, but that performance vs. a terrible lineup doesn’t tell us much. Over his last five starts vs. Atlanta, Walker has put up a whopping 9.45 ERA. In a game that could see plenty of traffic on the base paths, a cleanup hitter such as Riley is poised to produce.
Carlos Correa less than 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs
It’s been an atrocious two weeks for the Twins, losers in nine of their first 12 games. Among the many culprits for Minnesota’s slow start, Carlos Correa deserves some blame. The 30-year-old has hit just .150 while putting up two RBIs. However, a two-double performance on Tuesday could be a sign of better days to come.
Any hitting success is unlikely to carry over into tonight’s contest. Seth Lugo will take the mound for the Royals, where he’s posted a 3.05 ERA over 35 starts. In his career, the right-hander has held Correa to just one hit over eight plate appearances. Expect the shortstop’s slow start to carry over into Wednesday’s matchup.
