Texas Rangers @ Chicago Cubs over 4.5 runs through first five innings -105
Patrick Corbin makes his triumphant return to the majors after signing a minor league deal with the Rangers. With Jack Leiter sidelined by an injury, the Rangers had an open spot in the rotation that needed to be filled. Surprisingly, the Rangers are comfortable with him starting, despite not throwing during spring training or in the minors. Instead, Corbin last pitched in a simulated game, where he threw around 80 pitches. He should be able to go a “full” game today, but we’ll see what that entails. This is the same pitcher who posted a 5.62 ERA, with an xERA of 5.53 and a 4.41 FIP, over 174.2 innings last season. Against his sinker—his primary pitch—opposing batters hit .334 (xBA .337) with a .406 wOBA and 14 home runs.
Much of the attention will be on betting against Corbin, but Jameson Taillon hasn’t been particularly sharp either. In two starts, he’s allowed eight runs on 13 hits, including three home runs. All of his pitches have been hit hard so far, with opponents batting .333 against his fastball and .375 against his cutter. Between him and Corbin, I think we’ll see a flurry of offense in this game early.

Baltimore Orioles @ Arizona Diamondbacks over 4.5 runs through first five innings -120
Another game where I think we’ll see a lot of offense early is between the Orioles and Diamondbacks. Charlie Morton is scheduled to take on Merrill Kelly, both of whom are off to horrific starts. Morton, despite racking up strikeouts, has allowed nine runs on 13 hits, including three home runs, through 8.1 innings. The D-Backs are loaded with left-handed bats, against which Morton had a .338 wOBA and a massive 5.2 BB/9 last率先
Kelly just got shelled by the Yankees, allowing nine runs on nine hits with three walks in that start. He wasn’t all that impressive against the Cubs in the start prior, even though he allowed just one run. His command was shaky again, walking four batters in 5.1 innings. The top of the Orioles’ lineup is patient, particularly with Gunnar Henderson back in the mix. Like the Rangers and Cubs game, I think the bats get hot early.

Yordan Alvarez over 1.5 bases -105
Luis Castillo is taking the hill against the Astros tonight, which has my eyes on Alvarez. Castillo had some extreme splits last season, as lefties tagged him for a .361 wOBA and 18 of the 25 home runs he allowed. Righties, however, managed only a .253 wOBA and seven home runs. It’s very early, but lefties already have a .355 wOBA against Castillo with a home run through 26 plate appearances. Alvarez can handle the two main pitches Castillo throws, which are a fastball and slider. Combined, they account for 62% of his pitches this season, and Alvarez has a .364 wOBA against the fastball and a .339 wOBA against the slider since last season.
