Gary Payton II injury update: Ruled out vs. the Suns on 4/8/25

Golden State Warriors guard Gary Payton II has been ruled out of tonight’s contest against the Phoenix Suns with a knee injury.

The 32-year-old guard missed a game in March due to a knee injury and has suffered a series of bumps and scrapes this season. He only just returned Sunday from a four-game absence related to his thumb, playing full minutes against the Houston Rockets and scoring 16 points.

With the Warriors holding a 46-32 record in the thick of the playoff race, this decision may have been made out of caution. This Suns team has all but given up on the season and may not put up much of a fight. Perhaps the coaching staff saw an opportunity to give an important veteran rest and risk his absence in a game they should win.

While GPII largely operates with a minimal role in the offense, Buddy Hield could absorb additional minutes and see a few more shots than usual tonight. Gui Santos could be a candidate to see some run.

Payton II will look to return to the lineup on Wednesday against the Spurs.
